What Affects Actual Sheet Metal Weight

Even within carbon steel, different grades (e.g. S235 vs S355) have slightly different densities. For most practical purposes the standard 7.85 g/cm³ value is acceptable.

Why do different materials have different densities?
Each material has a different density based on its chemical composition. Carbon steel has a density of about 7.85 g/cm³, while aluminum is about 2.70 g/cm³ because aluminum is a much lighter metal.
How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator provides results based on theoretical material density. Actual weight may differ due to production dimensional tolerances (e.g., a plate with nominal 10mm thickness might actually be 9.8-10.2mm) and density variation between specific material grades.
Why add a margin for shipping planning?
It is recommended to add a 5-10% margin above the theoretical weight to account for material density variation, production tolerances, and packaging. This helps avoid material shortage or unexpected additional costs.
Can this calculator calculate weight for tubes?
Yes. Select 'Round Tube', 'Square Tube', or 'Pipe' shape and enter the appropriate dimensions. The calculator will calculate weight based on the volume formula for that shape.
